“Style is a constant, fashion is more seasonal” – Mark-Francis Vandelli

There are no constants with fashion, no staples. It’s an art that is notoriously difficult to keep up with as trends change seasonally and that’s the only guarantee you have with fashion, is that it’ll change at some point. What used to be in will be out. And if you’re looking for sustainability in it, expect none to be found. One could say that fashion is a waste. Wasteful in the sense that you could go buy an entire wardrobe of clothes deemed to be what’s in season only for you to sit with a wardrobe full of none trendy clothes the following season; and that’s what fashion offers you, a season of looking good and trendy but when it’s all said and done it’s a waste of money. A waste of time chasing down those trends.

But this isn’t one of those pieces that bashes fashion for forever changing. I love fashion and love everything that comes with it and what it offers. It’s the good it offers that excites me, that makes me put in a bit more effort when shopping for clothes. With fashion that good comes in the form of having style.

There are many factors that can impact a person’s style. Perhaps by religion, politics, culture and subculture, weather, body type, profession, upbringing and the list goes on. Style is your own, and no one can say otherwise. It is permanent and timeless; and not guided by fashion or the media. Style isn’t dependent on clothing but it can be an extension of it. In fact, style can be an extension of fashion but not the other way around. Whereas fashion adapts to what is “IN”, style takes its own direction and is an entity all its own.

There are many people without style that just follow fashion blindly and although they are fashionable, they are not to be considered stylish and the opposite can be said that there are plenty of stylish people who aren’t fashionable. It’s the way that you incorporate the latest fashion into your wardrobe that sets you apart and it’s all based on your personality and what suits you best. It is almost an art form that can be attributed to your wardrobe. Style, however, is an art form that embodies all of who you are and what you are like. So remember, if the current fashion trend doesn’t suit you and your personality best steer away from it or make changes to it so that it accommodates you and not the other way around.

“Style is personal. It has nothing to do with fashion. Fashion is over quickly. Style is forever.” – Ralph Lauren
